Important Update: WMG Academy is Becoming a Smartphone-Free Academy
Following the latest Department for Education (DfE) guidance to protect student wellbeing, minimise distractions, and support mental health, WMG Academy is transitioning to a smartphone-free environment.
Here is what you need to know about how this affects your child after the May half-term:
The Core Rule
- No Smart Devices: Students are prohibited from bringing smartphones or any other smart technology (including smartwatches, tablets, or Kindles) onto the Academy site.
- The “Brick” Phone Exception: If your child needs a phone for safety during their commute, they may bring a basic, simple phone that can only make/receive calls and texts (no internet or apps).
- Storage: Any permitted basic phone must be switched off and placed in a locker immediately upon arrival and remain there until the end of the school day.
Implementation Timeline
- June 2026 (After Half-Term): The policy officially begins for Year 10 and Year 12 students.
- September 2026: Full rollout across the entire Academy for all year groups.
Sixth Form Rules (Years 12 & 13)
- Year 12 and 13 students are permitted to use smartphones, but only within designated areas (such as the second-floor breakout area).
- In all other areas of the academy, they must follow the smartphone-free rule to set a professional example for younger students.
Strict Sanctions for Non-Compliance
If a smartphone is seen or used on the Academy site (outside of the designated Sixth Form area):
- The device will be confiscated by staff.
- Standard Return: Confiscated phones will be held securely and returned to the student on the Friday of that week. (Note: If confiscated on a Friday, it will be held until the following Friday).
- Parental Collection: Alternatively, a parent or carer can visit the Academy in person to collect the device before the Friday return date.
Logistics & Common Questions
- Payments & Travel: The canteen accepts bank cards or the ParentPay fingerprint system. For electronic bus passes, please switch to a physical smart card.
- Location Tracking: If you use tracking apps (like Life360) for commute safety, the Academy suggests using physical Smart Tags (e.g., Apple AirTags or Tile trackers) in school bags instead.
- Emergency Contact: The main office remains your primary point of contact. If there is an emergency, staff will contact you immediately, and urgent messages from home will be delivered straight to your child.
- Medical Exceptions: In accordance with the Equality Act, arrangements will be made for students with specific medical needs (e.g., diabetes monitoring). Please contact the Academy directly to discuss this.
Thank you for your continued partnership as we work together to create a focused, professional, and anxiety-free environment where our students can thrive.
